Modern comfort within historic walls
The Hotel Norddeutscher Bund looks back on a long tradition - founded in 1844, it received its present name "Norddeutscher Bund" shortly after 1866, the year in which the Hanseatic towns and principalities north of the Main River united under the leadership of Prussia by the August Alliance to form the so-called Norddeutscher Bund. The hotel's name can be traced back above all to the fact that in the last third of the 19th century it was "in" to express its patriotic sentiments publicly. The North German Federal Constitution of the newly founded Schutz- und Trutzbündnis (Protection and Defense Alliance), drawn up in 1867, was also the basis of Bismarck's Reichsverfassung, which came into force on 1 January 1871, remained valid until 1918, and is still partly to be found in our present constitution. In this respect, you are walking in our rooms on truly historical ground.
Whether Prince Bismarck really spent the night here in the hotel at that time - as rumour has it - is unfortunately not documented, but the geographical location of our beautiful spa Heiligenstadt - namely right in the middle of Germany - at least nourishes the imagination that it could have been like that.
Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the historical capital of Eichsfeld, has a lot to offer. Kings and emperors visited the city. Thomas Müntzer preached 1525 before the Probstkirche St. Marien, Theodor Storm was for eight years (1856-1864) district judge of the city and also Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine or the brothers Grimm gave themselves a rendezvous here during their lifetime.
But we do not want to bore you, dear readers, with lengthy historical explanations and therefore turn now first to the recreation and leisure possibilities offered here: Huge castles, cheerful festivals, lively pilgrimages and breathtaking half-timbered architecture: this is how the city's list of hosts rightly describes our beloved region, the Eichsfeld. Whether German-German border history, the legendary Eichsfelder farmer market, the contemplative migration on one of the beautiful pilgrim ways as well as perfect Wellness and cure possibilities offer our guests truly numerous possibilities, the relaxation and recovery. And to perfect this in your sense, that is our claim as a hotel and restaurant.
